The term ‘Gynecological Cancers’ comes with the medical condition in which cancer or tumor cells develop in the reproductive organs of a woman’s body.
Gynecological cancers are one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in women worldwide. Lakhs of women are diagnosed with gynecological cancers and hence, it is important to be aware of the various types of gynecological cancers.
There are six types of gynecological cancers of which three are common and the other three are rare which are listed below.
Uterine cancer
Cervical cancer
Ovarian cancer
Vulvar cancer
Vaginal cancer

Breast cancer: Except for skin cancers, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. It can happen at any age, but the risk increases with age. Some women may be more likely than others to develop breast cancer due to a variety of factors. However, every woman should be aware of the risks of breast cancer and what she can do to reduce her risk.

Cancer metabolism refers to the alterations in cellular metabolism pathways that are evident in cancer cells compared with most normal tissue cells. Metabolic alterations in cancer cells are numerous and include aerobic glycolysis, reduced oxidative phosphorylation and the increased generation of biosynthetic intermediates needed for cell growth and proliferation.

The tumor microenvironment is created by the tumor and dominated by tumor-induced interactions. Although various immune effector cells are recruited to the tumor site, their anti-tumor functions are downregulated, largely in response to tumor-derived signals. Tumor escape is accomplished through the activation of one or several molecular mechanisms that lead to inhibition of immune cell functions or to apoptosis of anti-tumor effector cells. The ability to block tumor escape depends on a better understanding of cellular and molecular pathways operating in the tumor microenvironment. Novel therapeutic strategies that emerge are designed to change the pro-tumor microenvironment to one favoring acute responses and potent anti-tumor activity.

Proteomics is a rapidly growing field that combines high throughput analytical methodologies such as two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and SELDI mass spectrometry methods with complex bioinformatics to study systems biology. Proteomic analyses are already widely in use for clinical studies ranging from cancer to other diseases such as cardiovascular disease, organ transplant, and pharmacodynamic studies.
 

Drug resistance continues to be the principal limiting factor to achieving cures in patients with cancer. The problem of drug resistance in cancer has strong similarities to the field of infectious disease, in that both disciplines are challenged by highly proliferating intrinsic or extrinsic aggressors.

Combination chemotherapy thus became a new paradigm for cancer therapy that led to the development of increasingly complex regimens. Cancer epidemiology is the study of the distribution, determinants, and frequency of malignant disease in specific populations. The objective is to define causative factors to formulate preventive strategies for control of the disease. Epidemiologic assessment provides the clinician with a quantification of cancer risk, outlines the basis for screening modalities for high-risk populations, and determines the efficacy of any preventive intervention. The session talks about the factors that predispose individuals to the development of disease and to quantitate risk.
